Dr. Tyra Moore
Dr. Tyra Moore, DSW, LICSW, LCSW-C, is the founder of Moore Therapeutic and Consulting Services. She is a licensed clinical social worker in the District of Columbia and Maryland, who has over 16 years of experience working in a variety of treatment settings with highly traumatized youth and adults. She received her B.A. in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill, her MSW from the University of Georgia, and her DSW from the University of Pennsylvania.
Tyra has a certification in Advanced Trauma Work and specializes in working with clients who are currently experiencing traumatic situations, as well as those who may be navigating through the residual impacts of past traumas. She also has extensive experience in both the healing of present attachment relationships as well as addressing historical breaks in early attachments. In addition to the offering of a safe and non-judgmental space, Tyra combines psychoeducation with an integrated trauma-informed approach. She draws from tenants of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, attachment therapy, and grief work. Additionally, Tyra uses the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) model to support clients in moving through past emotional injuries and reaching a place of acceptance.
Recently, Tyra has been doing more work around loss, particularly Ambiguous Losses which are considered non-traditional losses. Examples could be the loss of what one hoped the future would be, or the loss of something/someone that is not deceased but is also no longer around. Especially in the current times, many of us have felt the loss of what we knew life to be before the start of the pandemic. Because there is no traditional transitional ritual for something like divorce or the loss of safety due to heightened social injustices, Tyra supports clients in engaging in creating their own loss rituals as they move through the stages of grief.
Although focusing the early part of her career on work in the area of foster care, Tyra has more recently expanded her trauma work to include training and providing clinical supports around racial trauma. Tyra believes that far too often we underestimate the traumatic impacts of internal and external racial discord. Tyra, through her work with local training partners like The Management Center in Washington, DC, and national leaders in the area of racial trauma like Resmaa Menakem, understands that racial injustices and violence, systemic oppression, and individual macroaggressions are impacting many of us personally and professionally. There is also a historical component that is critical to understanding and treating racial trauma, which Tyra explores with her clients in the context of treatment.
Tyra is certain that no matter what the areas of discomfort, healing most often requires an expression of courage and vulnerability inside of safe spaces. Tyra is committed to providing that safe space for her clients to discuss, discover, unpack, address, and release the emotional, cognitive, and visceral residuals of trauma.
